8/22/2011 ~1st Email from the field!!~

Hey family!!!!

Its pday- today!! I'm doing great! It's so crazy here for sure!!! My travels here went well. I met a guy at the airport named Hosea and we started talking about the Book of Mormon and our religion while my companions were on the phone.  It was really great to talk to him about stuff.  I tried to place a book of Mormon but he rejected so i gave him a little pamphlet and pass along card and all so that was good! haha. I was exhausted when i got here, but I made it and am enjoying it for sure. I love it! It's very hot and very humid here. It has rained every day since I have been here so that's different as well.  You've got to always have something hanging on the line or it will get moldy and things, its crazy. I got assigned to the capital area and all. The area is called Herrara Trece. Our apartment is actually 30 minutes away so we have to walk there every single day to get to work so its tons of walking but i love it!! The food is interesting but I'm also enjoying it. It's alot of just rice and beans and meats. Its cool stuff! Also the Dominican republic is SO poor its humbling for sure. Mexico looks like paradise compared to here but the people are the nicest people you will ever meet! Very welcoming! It's crazy because we are in the capital but there is still no running water. We shower with a bucket of water so that is something I'm not used to, haha, and its freezing cold water too! My companions name is Elder Mark Phillips. He is from Utah and has been out for 21 months. He is a cool kid. I'm glad he isn't trunky and is still here serving. I like him alot. We have also had some success already! We have a baptism this Saturday and then we set another date for September 10th. This new curriculum is getting me involved. I contact people and all and I was the one that actually invited our investigator to be baptized this Saturday haha! My first day i didn't even know these people we were teaching but when I tried to speak I was a little nervous of course and the first thing they said to me was ¨dont be afraid to make mistakes we are all friends and aren't going to make fun of you or anything.¨ It was something I enjoyed hearing. I love the people already! Yesterday was Sunday and we ate at a members home.  The Ward mission leaders home and his wife cooked us beans, rice, pork and a salad type thing and it was really good.  I was stuffed but she kept telling me to eat more and more, haha. It was funny.  We also went to church and its only a branch here, only like 20 people which I'm not used to for sure. To start the meeting, a girl about the age of 8 or 9 gave the invocation to sacrament meeting, hahaha, and then we sing the hymns without music because they don't have a piano or anything! It's different but still great!!! I have never sweat so much in my life!!!!!!! It's very humid and I'm always so tired at the end of the day. I'm so excited to be here though and be doing the lords work!!! It's awesome! It's also very difficult to understand the people here. They cut off their ¨s¨ and all so its hard to distinguish between stuff sometimes and they speak really fast! But everyday gets a little bit better. I have a Dominican Missionary that lives in our apartment thing as well and he is trying to learn English, so me and him work together. I teach him English and he teaches me Spanish. It's pretty cool! I'm really excited to work and want to go non stop haha!  But ya that's whats going on here. Things are great!!! I love my trainer - he is cool. Sometimes I don't think he is as excited as me to get to work but I think we can do some good things together!  I'm healthy and happy although it is hard not to go to the bathroom alot haha!  The food is something an American is not used to that's for sure!!!! I'll just leave it at that haha!  I met the President and Hermana Rodriguez again and got to talk to them. It was great!

So how's it going? What have y'all been up to!!!? Beck looks like he is getting huge.  So cute eating his watermelon and all! How'sschool and work going? How's Clayton and Jordan and Rachel? Lets hear it all! I enjoyed talking to you all on the phone, that was great! How is the calling?? That's awesome mom, you will do great!!!! Tell Morgan and Clayton Happy Birthday! Hope its the best for sure!!! I just heard its supposed to be really stormy these next 2 days.  That's all I know about the hurricane! You should have seen my first day here. It rained like crazy! The streets were flooded and is was a good way to start off haha!

If I was you guys I would just email me, like the whole family because it's hard to do the whole letter thing and sometimes I wouldn't even get it and all. So if ya want you can tell the whole family and some friends to just email me or something! But i love you all very much!!!! You are in my prayers and please know everything is great with Elder Reidhead! Thanks for the email and pictures they were awesome!!! I'll talk to you guys next week!!!! Love you all!!!

Elder Reidhead

PS.

Oh and also I'll let you know the hardest thing for people here is the law of chasity and the Word of Wisdom is huge BUT something they struggle with the most is going to church when its in the afternoon! They will go to church if its earlier in the day but our church is at 3 in the afternoon and so its hard for them to commit and want to come! The women here also dont know what the heck modesty is! They are all dirty dressed women that dont care, it's quite gross actually. Oh and also the place never sleeps! People are always going and its so loud 24-7!!! You only have electricity for a couple hours a day.  It's like a couple hours in the morning and then off all day until like 8 or 9 at night. It's crazy! Man I wish you guys could experience this! Hahaha its awesome!
